Silverlon® BCD 4″x4″ dressings weigh approximately 2.40 grams each. Of that, 19.23% is metallic silver, which means that there is 0.4600 g (460 mg) of silver on each dressing. At 24 hours, the dressing releases 42.615 ppm (mg/L), releasing 9-10% of the total silver capacity, which is more than 5 times what is necessary for an effective kill of pseudomonas (8ppm) and 3 times for MRSA (12 ppm). And there is a huge residual of metallic silver on the nylon fabric to impede any bacteria growing there and reinfecting the wound. |

Silver Sulfadiazine Cream, on the other hand contains 1% silver sulfadiazine by weight, and since only 30% of that compound is actually silver, that means that there is only 0.0030 g (3mg) released (assuming the best case of 100% release) for each gram of cream. Thus it would take over 14 grams of cream to release the same amount of silver as does one Silverlon® 4″x4″ dressing at 24 hours. Silver Sulfadiazine cream is recommended to be applied at 1/16 inch thickness-at that thickness, a 16 sq. inch area would take about 14 g of the cream. |
