Advanced Negative Pressure Wound Dressings

Negative Pressure Wound Devices and Silver Nylon Fabric:
A Comparison of Fluid Transfer Capability Utilizing Standard Dressings, Silverlon® Contact Dressings and Silverlon® Negative Pressure Dressings
Roger Huckfeldt MD, Debbie Mikkelson RN, Pedram Zendehrouh MD, Cindy Lowe CCRP, St. John’s Regional Trauma and Burn Center, Springfield MO

The benefits of both negative pressure wound management and silver plated nylon fabrics in wound healing have been well established. Negative pressure wound devices provide a means of wound protection and advanced healing. Silver fabric provides an antimicrobial protection allowing advanced wound healing and increased pain control. Combining these therapies makes great intuitive sense and in fact is utilized by many clinicians. We have used Silverlon® with VAC® therapy successfully but have been concerned that the silver fabric may impede fluid flow into the VAC® device and as such have routinely cut slits into the fabric prior to VAC® placement.

Argentum Medical LLC, in conjunction with our research center, has created a new fabric designed to allow unimpeded fluid flow when used with negative pressure wound devices. This fabric identified as, Silverlon® Antimicrobial Negative Pressure Dressing™, provides conventional silver contact protection with a fabric suitable for wounds from burns, trauma, ulcers, and surgery that are suitable for negative pressure devices. We designed an in-vitro project to evaluate the fluid flow rates using VAC® therapy with conventional foam dressings, foam dressings with Silverlon® Contact Dressing and the new Silverlon® Antimicrobial Negative Pressure Dressing™. Flow totals were measured for a three minute period for all three arms of the study using both normal saline and a saline-pectin mixture designed to simulate proteinacious wound secretions. Results are illustrated in the table below.

Summary: Combination therapy using silver plated nylon cloth and negative pressure devices are substantiated in this in-vitro model. Fluid flow rates of the new Silverlon® Antimicrobial Negative Pressure Dressing™ are better than Silverlon® Contact Dressing and in fact are not significantly different than flow rates with VAC® sponges alone.

about this product.

"In the presence of moisture, this unique product continuously emits a very high level of ionic silver into the wound bed. By combining the benefits of negative pressure wound management and silver plated nylon fabric, this process is an unprecedented step for wound care, providing faster wound closure, decreased pain and infections, and a reduction in overall treatment costs." Frost & Sullivan

The Silverlon® NPD Advantage:
  • 7 day use over skin grafts while under negative pressure therapy systems
(1 dressing kit for 1 week of therapy)
  • Fewer dressing changes over the course of therapy
  • Produces an accelerated wound healing potential
  • No infections reported
  • Provides medical and economical advantages
  • Minimal reduction in fluid flow capacity as compared to VAC foam alone

Silverlon® Negative Pressure Wound Dressings are applied for improved outcomes with the Versatile 1™ or other Negative Pressure Wound Therapy Systems when treating chronic and acute wounds, burns, and surgical procedures.
