Silverlon® Products and Reimbursement - A Quick Reference Summary

Simply put, all prospective pay situations cover Silverlon® products as they do every other medical supply used in the treatment of a patient when the payment for care is prospective. Therefore, a separate product code for Silverlon® is not needed. The summary below provides more detail on how reimbursement is made in each clinical setting.

HCPCS codes, such as those assigned to wound dressings, are used only when a supply can be billed separately from a service. This would apply when reimbursement is not under a prospective payment system or for a Medicare beneficiary in a nursing facility or at home not receiving services. Some Silverlon® products not listed in the reimbursement table below are not yet assigned a HCPCS code because they have not yet been reviewed by the SADMERC for code assignment. In this case, the biller should contact the SADMERC (877.735.1326) for a recommendation on how to bill the specific product. They may recommend using A4649, a miscellaneous code. If so, there are five pieces of information you must include when billing: a description of the item supplied (size and volume of the dressing); brand name; manufacturer’s name; a catalog picture or description; and the catalog retail and wholesale price, or manufacturer invoice.

Private Insurers, Managed Care Organizations, HMOs, and Prepaid Plans differ individually based upon the specific contract with the specific provider. Some may be prospective pay, while others allow for separate product specific billing and reimbursement. Case managers are the primary decision makers for outpatient services.
