Frost & Sullivan bestows the 2006 Product Innovation Award for the U.S. antimicrobial dressings market to Argentum Medical, LLC (Argentum Medical). This award recognizes excellence in development of the Argentum Medical Silverlon® Antimicrobial Negative Pressure Dressing (NPD).
Headquartered in Willowbrook, Illinois, Argentum Medical is a leader in antimicrobial silver dressings. In early 2001, Argentum Medical was formed to commercialize patented and patent pending silver nylon technology. With the success of its burn products, the company diversified into other areas of wound care. Today, Argentum manufactures over 60 different combinations and sizes of Silverlon® products, utilizing the Silverlon® core technology applied to various nylon substrates, including burn dressings, wound dressings, surgical dressings, negative pressure, and calcium alginate dressings.
Through the creation of innovative and cost-effective solutions, Argentum Medical positions itself at the forefront of wound care. Substitute products such as negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) increasingly pose a threat to antimicrobial silver dressings. However, Argentum Medical has designed a revolutionary dressing to work in conjunction with NPWT to accelerate healing and reduce overall costs of NPWT.
Argentum Medical’s Silverlon® NPD is applied to chronic and acute wounds, burns and surgical procedures to improve the outcome of NPWT. Silverlon® NPD accelerates healing by 20-40 percent more than NPWT alone. This remarkable dressing lowers infections by up to 50 percent, providing an antimicrobial barrier that reduces the risk of contaminating to the foam and wound bed. The silver coated nylon fabric provides a highly flexible non-adherent layer that stretches for dressing large or difficult areas, and allows moisture and wound debris to pass freely into the disposable absorbent medium placed above it. Its transparent surface allows for monitoring the wound for dressing changes.
Due to the NPD’s sustained high level of ion release and its unique moisture handling design (high absorbency), the dressing can remain on the wound for up to seven days, thereby reducing dressing changes and overall costs. Unlike its competition, the Silverlon® NPD autocatalytic silver-plating process uniformly and permanently coats the entire polymeric substrate surface circumferentially with (ionic) pure silver. In the presence of moisture, this unique product continuously emits a very high level of ionic silver into the wound bed. By combining the benefits of negative pressure wound management and silver plated nylon fabric, this process is an unprecedented step for wound care, providing faster wound closure, decreased pain and infections, and a reduction in overall treatment costs.
Through their outstanding dedication to product research and development initiatives implemented, Frost & Sullivan believes Argentum Medical will both rapidly grow the company’s market penetration as well as positively impact the quality of healthcare. Argentum Medical is poised to continue its growth in the market and gain additional market share in years ahead. Innovative dressings such as their Silverlon® NPD that combine accelerated healing, infection prevention, and reduced costs are likely to drive growth in the U.S antimicrobial silver dressings market.
Based on the successful development of the Silverlon® NPD and continued leadership in product innovation, Frost & Sullivan is proud to present Argentum Medical with the 2006 Product Innovation Award for the U.S. antimicrobial dressings market.

Today Argentum Medical LLC and Carolina Mills Inc. announced the start up of a new manufacturing facility, Carolina Silver Technologies. This facility will produce silver plated yarns and fabrics for fabrication into Argentum Medical’s current Silverlon® brand of wound and burn care dressings as well as other brands to be rolled out later this year.
Carolina Mills, with more than seventy years in the textile business, brings extensive and highly regarded expertise in precision textile dyeing, finishing and spinning, and will operate the facility. The combination of Carolina’s textile knowledge and process control expertise and CST’s plating experience, combined with Argentum’s wound care knowledge and patented technology, is expected to yield the highest quality plated fabric in the world.
Among several competing silver wound care platforms, Argentum and CST believe the textile option offers the greatest promise. Not only are plated textiles more flexible and programmable for performance, they are also the safest and the most durable of all silver products.
Steve Dobbins, president of Carolina Mills, states “ This new venture marks an exciting opportunity for our company. We are entering a high value added industry, and one that has few known competitors throughout the world. Since this facility will also be able to produce plated material and fiber for non medical applications, such as electromagnetic shielding, we are excited about its future.”
Gregg Silver, CEO of Argentum Medical, adds “ We see great promise in the use of silver plated fabric not only as a topical antimicrobial on all mammals, but also as an overall performance enhancement to the body’s own capabilities. With fewer than five suitable platers in the world, we are delighted to have the world class assistance of Carolina Mills. Combined with our intellectual property, we expect to become the premier world class provider of textile based advanced wound care products. ”
