Directions for Home Use

Supplies Needed                                                     Back to Contact Dressing Purchase Page
  1. A Silverlon® Wound Contact Dressing sized to fit into the wound bed and up onto ½″ (one-half inch) of normal skin around the wound. You may use either side of the dressing on the wound. (The Silverlon® Wound Contact Dressing should last for up to 7 days if properly cared for as described below).

  2. A secondary cover dressing of choice to be placed over the Silverlon® Dressing. If needed, tape, Tubular Stretch Knit Dressing or compressive wrap dressings to hold the cover dressing in place.

  3. Clean water for wetting or rinsing Silverlon® when needed. Your caregiver may have given you saline for rinsing out your wound, if so, use it for your wound and not for wetting the Silverlon® Dressing.

Note: When using Silverlon® Wound Pad dressings, place silver side down onto wound.

Better technology.
 Better outcomes.™

Your goal is to keep your wound and the Silverlon® dressing clean, moist, and covered. Recommend washing hands with warm water and soap before and after dressing change. The Silverlon® may be worn while showering unless otherwise directed by your physician or nurse. Please check with physician or nurse for exact showering directions. Soaking in a bathtub is not recommended.

Dressing Change For Exudating (Draining) Wounds
  1. Remove and dispose of the outer absorbent cover dressings when saturated, and either:

    1. Apply fresh cover dressings directly over the Silverlon® for up to 7 days
      OR
    2. Remove the Silverlon® Dressing and rinse with clean water being sure to rinse away any exudate that maybe on the Wound Contact Dressing (You may stretch the dressing by its corners to open up its weave to help loosen the exudate from the cloth) , gently squeeze out excess water, and reapply to wound while moist and then apply fresh cover dressing over the rinsed Silverlon®.

For Dry Wounds
Add moisture (Water) to the Silverlon® dressing when dry. Tip: Check in the morning or at night, if dry to the touch, add moisture to the top of the dressing. Moistened gauze, foam, or hydrogels may be placed over the Silverlon® dressing to help maintain moisture.

General Considerations During Use
  1. Do not use of saline as the primary wetting agent for Silverlon®, as the chloride ion inhibits silver ion release. You may use saline as your wound rinse or irrigation solution.

  2. Remove Silverlon® prior to MRI procedures.

Additional Instructions
Do not remove the Silverlon® Wound Contact Dressing while dry or if Silverlon® is sticking. If sticking occurs, rewet and saturate the Silverlon® Dressing waiting until it can easily be removed. If problems occur, including swelling, severe redness or sharply increased pain, contact your physician.
